SOUTHFIELD, Mich.—In recognition of World Patient Safety Day on Thursday, Sept. 17, Lawrence Technological University reaffirms its commitment to reducing incidents of healthcare violence through innovative solutions developed by the LTU Healthcare Violence Reduction Center (HVRC).
Research estimates that 57 nurses are attacked in the U.S. each day. Within the last two years, 50% of healthcare workers have witnessed or been victimized by increased rates of violent attacks at their place of work. Healthcare violence negatively impacts patient experience, as attacks often increase patient anxiety and delay critical care. In fact, up to 90% of emergency department doctors believe that violent incidents have a direct impact on patient wellbeing.
The Healthcare Violence Reduction Center (HVRC) at Lawrence Technological University is the nation’s first and only center exclusively aimed at reducing violence in healthcare. With the aim of enhancing workplace safety and improving patient care, the Center supplies providers with innovative solutions backed by multidisciplinary research conducted by award-winning LTU faculty.
Echoing LTU’s “theory and practice” philosophy, the Center partners with providers and industry experts to create, deploy, and test comprehensive safety strategies, with an emphasis on accelerating the implementation of practical, tech-forward solutions. The center’s dedicated researchers, led by director Scott Olsen, leverage deep knowledge in subjects like cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, and facility design to develop solutions like emergency response wearables, training technologies, and redesigned room layouts to prevent the escalation of healthcare violence.
Healthcare providers, insurers, security firms, associations, agencies, and municipalities all have a stake in reducing healthcare violence to protect providers and patients alike. Lawrence Technological University invites stakeholders to become members of the Healthcare Violence Reduction Center to receive unparalleled access to innovative, research-based solutions that will enhance the safety of their facilities.
