NOVI–For three decades, The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) has proudly hosted the Michigan Regional Future City Competition, igniting a passion for STEM among young innovators. This year’s milestone event celebrates 30 years of empowering students to tackle real-world challenges with creativity and technical skill.
Future City begins with a fundamental question: How can we make the world a better place? This year’s theme, Above the Current, challenges students to design a floating city and demonstrate how it keeps its citizens healthy and safe. The event will take place on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi.
This year’s competition will gather hundreds of middle school students from across Michigan, showcasing their ingenuity and teamwork. Students will present city models and innovative solutions to a panel of esteemed judges, including professionals from engineering, architecture, and urban planning.
Event Highlights:
- Hands-On Learning: Teams present detailed city models and comprehensive project plans that reflect months of dedicated effort.
- Judges’ Panel: Industry professionals evaluate entries on creativity, technical accuracy, and the practicality of their solutions.
- Inspiration and Mentorship: Students engage with STEM professionals, gaining insights and inspiration for their future careers.
The students will begin making their city presentations to panels of judges at 9:10 a.m. Tuesday. The three top-ranked finalists will make presentations to the entire audience and judges starting at 12:30 p.m.
The winning team from the Michigan Regional Competition will advance to the National Future City Finals in Washington, D.C., held during National Engineers Week in February.
