Expleo opens automotive R&D center in Troy

TROY–The Paris- and India-based engineering firm Expleo Group announced the official opening of its new U.S. digital engineering center in Troy.

The office was inaugurated on June 6 in an opening ceremony attended by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Expleo CEO Rajesh Krishnamurthy, Expleo executive vice president for automotive Marcus Ganguin, Troy and Oakland County officials, and local business leaders from the automotive industry.

Expleo’s new 25,000-square-foot space has been designed to provide services including digital design, engineering, and quality improvement services to automakers and auto suppliers in the region and beyond.

In addition to an extensive office area for engineering talent, it incorporates a state-of-the-art research and development work space, including a model shop floor, from which to deliver engineering and IT services to auto manufacturers, from concept to after-sales services. This enables Expleo to provide a flexible environment for working hands-on with vehicles and complex test benches for future platforms.

“Expleo’s new R&D facility in Troy will create good-paying jobs and ensure we lead the future of mobility,” Whitmer said. “Last year, I went to Expleo in France to pitch them on coming to Michigan, and I am so proud that they have decided to bet on our state. Thanks to our strong R&D ecosystem, skilled, dedicated workforce, and growing suite of economic development tools, we can help leading firms like Expleo thrive. Let’s keep going everywhere and competing with everyone to bring jobs and investments back home to Michigan.”

Added Ganguin: “The cars on today’s roads are more sophisticated than ever, requiring both precision engineering and the latest digital capabilities. Our new location in Troy, Michigan is a strategically important step for Expleo, allowing us to bring our broad expertise across domains such as electrification, quality, functional safety and digital experiences to our customers’ doorsteps, where they need us most.”

From this location, Expleo will provide a comprehensive suite of services for businesses looking to meet customer demand for the latest automotive technologies, including electric vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems, and software-defined vehicles.

Working with partners, Expleo will leverage its proven experience in the automotive sector in areas such as functional safety and mechanical engineering, as well as the latest capabilities in generative AI and cybersecurity to develop safe, secure and reliable vehicles for consumers.

The Troy R&D center has 45 employees, with plans to grow to more than 200 Michiganders employed onsite in the next five years. Customers of Expleo in Michigan will also benefit from Expleo’s worldwide network of 19,000 experts across 30 countries with cross-industry experience delivering transformation projects.

Gautier Dekerle, U.S. business and operations director for automotive at Expleo, said: “Few places are so synonymous with the history of the automotive industry as Michigan, and we’re delighted to be part of this community. We have an ambitious vision to grow our footprint in the region. Expleo plays a key role in supporting auto OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers worldwide, from design to aftersales, while harnessing emerging technologies and engineering processes. The support of the Michigan government has been a crucial factor in helping us bring that experience and expertise to U.S. businesses through our new location in Michigan.”

Expleo initially announced its intention to open a Michigan office in a joint statement with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corp. in June 2023, as the governor led a trade mission to France. Its Troy office becomes Expleo’s eighth location in North America and the second to open in 12 months.
