ESD offers member tour of MSU power plant

SOUTHFIELD — The Engineering Society of Detroit will conduct an exclusive, members-only tour of the T.B. Simon Power Plant on the campus of Michigan State University.

The tour will take place Friday, June 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the plant, located at 354 Service Road in East Lansing.

The power plant was once the largest on-campus coal-burning power plant in the United States. But since 2016, the plant has been coal free, and now burns exclusively natural gas and biofuels. The plant supplies all electrical power, heating and cooling to more than 500 buildings the sprawling, 5,200-acre MSU campus.

Plant guides will take ESD members on a walking tour of the site that features high pressure boilers, steam turbine generators, and auxiliary equipment. They now have added a combined cycle turbine which uses a gas turbine combined with a steam turbine.

To register for this tour, call (248) 353-0735, or visit ESD.org.
