PLYMOUTH — Comcast Business announced it has completed a $1.85 million expansion of its fiber-based network in Detroit that will add an additional 70-mile fiber ring to businesses across the city.
Capable of delivering up to 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) of network capacity, the fiber ring circles the entire city, east to west, from Grosse Pointe to Dearborn and, north to south from north of Highland Park to the Detroit riverfront.
Comcast said the build-out provides businesses access to a comprehensive portfolio of high-performance Ethernet, internet, and voice products and services that will help meet the day-to-day demands of organizations requiring large amounts of bandwidth, looking to link multiple sites or branch locations, or planning to connect their offices to a third-party data center.
“As our region seeks to attract more tech pioneers and startups, an investment like this that provides expansive access to a 100-gig-capable network is one more reason why they should consider Detroit,” said Peter Chapman, executive vice president-business development for the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. “Businesses from virtually every industry and of all sizes have the need for robust, reliable bandwidth.”
Comcast Business’ fiber expansion follows the company’s $8.5 million investment over the past 24 months in its fiber-based network across the city of Detroit. Over the past three years, the company has invested $36.9 million statewide completing fiber builds across other southeastern Michigan communities as well as Grand Rapids, Holland and Lansing.
“A symmetrical, fiber internet solution is no longer only sought out by massive companies with multiple locations,” said Jeff Marston, vice president of Comcast Business in Michigan. “The increasing reliance on big data and cloud applications is driving bandwidth usage from small and medium-size companies. Our scalable, fiber network allows us to be all things to all businesses because we can easily tailor our technology solutions to meet their changing and diverse needs.”
All of Comcast Business’ multi-Gigabit Ethernet services are delivered over a network that serves 20 of the nation’s 25 largest markets and spans 149,000 miles across 39 states and the District of Columbia. Comcast was the first service provider in the world to offer Metro Ethernet Forum CE 2.0 certified Ethernet services and was also the first to achieve all three of the previous CE 1.0 certifications (MEF 9, 14 and 18).
