Auto Show Rolling Out News, Wayfinding Apps

DETROIT — The North American International Auto Show is launching a suite of auto show apps that will bring relevant show information directly to the palm of attendees’ hands.

NAIAS is the first auto show in the world to launch an interactive show floor wayfinding app. The app, closely developed in conjunction with the auto show’s technology partner, IBM, uses beacons installed across the show floor to ping showgoers’ phones as they explore the auto show.

Paul Sabatini, 2016 NAIAS chairman said the apps will allow show-goers “to access important show information and see the breaking news coming out of the show from their handheld devices.”

The news and information app for the auto show will feature the latest automotive news, photos and videos, live video coverage of new vehicle and concept car unveilings, Twitter updates from NAIAS on new products and show events, information about the show and ticket sales, Detroit weather forecasts and live radar, and a guide to local restaurants and businesses.

The app is presented by WDIV-TV Local 4, ClickOnDetroit.com and the Detroit Auto Dealers Association.

The app was developed by WDIV with Graham Media Group, a Chicago-based TV broadcasting company.

The IBM NAIAS wayfinding app, meanwhile, will help show-goers find their way around the new floor layout. For the 2016 auto show, more than 70 percent of the show floor has undergone changes, including a revamped layout and new exhibit build. Through beacons installed around the show floor, the wayfinding app will allow attendees to track their progress along the show floor, helping them better navigate and connect with automakers and suppliers. Once attendees made their way around the entire show floor, they’ll receive a push notification instructing them to enter their email for a chance to win 2016 NAIAS apparel.

The wayfinding app is not yet available for download.
