Flextronics Opens Michigan Office For Connected Vehicle Tech

DETROIT — San Jose, Calif.-based Flextronics International (Nasdaq: FLEX) announced the opening of an office in Farmington Hills.

The connected vehicle technology provider said the new office will provide a variety of services, including product design and development, engineering, validation testing, development garage, prototyping and quality engineering.

The 30,000-square-foot space has about 100 employees. The company says it is working with several automakers on “new innovative projects,” including vehicle-to-cloud communication, in-engine semiconductor sensor integration and smart seat sensors.

According to M2M Research, 15 percent of the 85 million new vehicles sold in 2015 will have embedded connectivity technology in them. By 2025, 90 percent of all vehicles sold will have these technologies.

Chris Obey, president of Flextronics Automotive, said in a statement: “Flextronics is uniquely positioned to help OEMs as they move from the Information Age into the Intelligence Age with advanced technologies and embedded sensors, software, processing, and connectivity with other devices and the cloud that are enabling entirely new functionality and more applications in the marketplace than ever before.”

Flextronics posts $26 billion a year in sales in the design, engineering, manufacturing and logistics of connectivity technology to the networking, telecom, enterprise computing and storage, industrial, capital equipment, appliances, automation, medical, automotive, aerospace, defense, energy, mobile and computing industries.
