SOUTHFIELD — The Engineering Society of Detroit is seeking volunteer team mentors and judges for the Michigan Regional Future City Competition.
Students are beginning their work now for this exciting science, technology, engineering and mathematics competition for middle school students, which ends on Competition Day Jan. 26.
In Future City, students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade imagine, design, and build cities of the future — first on SimCity software, then in a physical model. They also write essays and create oral presentations on their city designs, fostering writing and interpersonal skills along with the science and engineering knowledge they gain.
Mentors spend an hour or two a week between now and January working with their team. Mentors add connections to real-life engineering experiences, serve as a technical coach, and help translate the academic to the real world of engineering. People who work in the engineering community are preferred to serve as mentors. This includes engineers, technical professionals, architects, and city or urban planners.
Judges are also needed. The role of the judge is to draw on their expertise to fairly judge a team’s efforts. Easy to use assessment tools, called rubrics, help judges evaluate work. Some judging can be done virtually, or judge the fun-filled one-day team presentation experience! Judges are needed for three stages of the competition:
• SimCity Computer Designs — The SimCity designs will be judged in December and January.
• Essays and Narratives — The essays and narratives will be judged in December and January.
• Models and Team Presentations – Attend on competition day, January 26, 2015, and evaluate the team’s models and presentations.
