FDA Commissioner To Keynote 10th Annual MichBio Expo & Conference

ANN ARBOR — MichBio, the trade association for Michigan’s biosciences industry, will welcome hundreds of bioscience professionals and service providers to its 10th Annual Expo & Conference Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit.

The event, co-hosted by Wayne State University, is the largest annual gathering of Michigan bioscience industry professionals.

The theme of this two-day event is “Regulating Innovation: Advancing Access to Healthcare” and features a keynote address by commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration.

As FDA Commissioner, Hamburg advances regulatory science, medical product innovation, and agency globalization, and oversees the implementation of laws to curb the use of tobacco and enhance food safety. Appointed by President Obama in 2009, Hamburg is the second woman to serve as commissioner.

Among its healthcare-related programming, the conference will includes human health and business growth sessions on:

* Payment Reform: Implications for R&D and Commercialization
* Communicating and Marketing Your Product or Technology in Today’s Healthcare Environment
* Michigan Support Services for Commercialization and Growth
* Effective Disease Foundation and Bio-Industry R&D Collaborations
* Physician, Hospital, and Payer Think: Understanding Healthcare Strategic Decision-Making

The conference agenda also includes the CEOs Unplugged session, “Strategically Building Michigan’s Bio-Industry;” a bio Industry town hall meeting with invited guest former U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, and a tour of Detroit-area bioscience facilities.

Host Chris Holman from the Michigan Business Network will be interviewing attendees and broadcasting from the event on Oct. 1.

MichBio is currently accepting applications for the Emerging Biosciences Showcase (due Aug. 29) and nominations for the Good to Great and Innovator of the Year awards (due Sept. 5).
